Translating Light

In this workshop we’ll paint the beautiful architecture of Zurich using ink and watercolor. I’ll teach you my approach to translate light and emotion onto our page. Rather than capturing an image, or drawing a simple outline of what we see, we’ll concentrate on how light and shadows reveal the forms and volume of buildings. I’ll show you how to loosen up your sketches, use expressive colors, and leave something for the viewer’s imagination.

Material
  • Pencil (4B, 6B)
  • Brushes (one round size 8 or 10, one bigger flat, one bigger mop brush/wash brush)
  • Ink pen/fineliner (waterproof, or fountain pen with waterproof ink)
  • A basic sketchbook (approx 22x28cm) suitable for thumbnail sketches as well as watercolor exercises
  • Sheets of 100% cotton watercolor paper (approximately 30x40cm, as block or loose sheets)
  • Watercolour – Bring what you have and we’ll have fun!
  • Paper towel, Eraser, Water bottle, Water container (plastic cup), etc.

These are suggestions. If you don’t have anything on this list, don’t worry. Bring what you have!
