Marina Grechanik
Marina Grechanik is a freelance illustrator, graphic designer and artist who graduated from an art academy in Minsk, Belarus. Marina initiated the USk Israel group — regularly leading sketchcrawls, coordinating the Urban Sketchers Israel blog and organizing and curating group exhibitions. Sketching is one of Marina’s passions. Everywhere she travels, she takes her sketchbook along with her. But the real essence of urban sketching for her is finding stories in everyday routines, and combining sketching with daily tasks.

Urban portraits that tell stories
For me there is no more interesting subject than sketching people, and of course the most fascinating part is — their faces. In this workshop we'll practice drawing portraits, but not in a traditional academic approach. We will think about how we see reality and will discover what is the essence of "likeness" in portraiture. We will try not to mechanically copy reality but to observe the essentials from the artistic point of view, and to sacrifice the secondary. We will work fast and base our sketches on live observation, getting in touch with our gut feelings with emphasis on the emotional side of sketching. We will try different approaches, get out of our comfort zones, have fun and enjoy the process. Finally we'll create a story of a stranger based on his/her portrait, each one with his/her own approach.
