Darman Angir

Darman was born in Bima, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, in 1970. He graduated in 1994 from Petra University, majoring in Architecture. As an architect, he has designed and built mostly residential projects for the last two decades. Most of his sketches are closely related to the city: old buildings, urban settings, and other daily activities. He loves sketches because they are able to tell more personal stories about the intimate details, proportions, architectural styles, lights, and nuances.

Mood and drama in urban sketching

Wet on wet underwash

Urban Sketching can record and heighten the drama of a city. Wet on wet underwashes in the first step of watercolouring is one of the quickest ways to build this mood/drama. We can finish a dramatic urban sketch in more controlled time using this technique.

Learning goals:
  • Understand and know to use colour harmony basics effectively: only 2–4 colours are needed for most sketching sessions.
  • More time control in watercolouring Urban Sketches: the sketch will be considered finished within a shorter period.
  • Heighten the dramatic mood in Urban Sketching: More focus on the main object and simplify the non-significant elements
Materials:
  • Watercolour paper size A5–A4, min. 200gsm, cold pressed, rough surface
  • 2–4 watercolour tubes, complementary colours of your choice : ultramarine + burnt sienna, indigo + van dyke brown, shadow green + burnt umber
  • Watercolour box: containing 12–20 watercolour pans
  • Deep mixing palette, preferably with 2–3 deep mixing areas
  • Watercolour brushes, preferably dagger brush, round “mop” brush or “wash” brush
  • Mechanical pencils: 0.7–0.9 mm lead (2B)
  • Broad line markers, fountain pen + dark ink, dark colour brush pens
  • Optional: several coloured pencils or oil pastels (any bright intense colours)
